One of the top Korean manga (or manhwa) creators is landing in America with a bang. TOKYOPOP is proud to introduce Hee Jung Park to the English speaking audience with four of her bestselling titles: Hotel Africa, Fever, Too Long, and Martin & John (title not yet final). Park debuted in 1993 and has been making big waves in the Korean manga scene, especially with Hotel Africa, one of the bestselling manga of all times in the peninsular nation. So popular is her work, she published an art book in 2005 and even had an art show of her own in a gallery—two things female creators rarely get to do.
Critics in Korea have called her “a breath of fresh air” as she breaks away from the cliché love stories and focuses on more mature themes and stories that are beautifully rendered in her unique art style. In Hotel Africa, for instance, she investigates the sense of hope, happiness, and how such emotions come to shape people’s lives in standalone, episodic tales. Park isn’t interested in presenting a happy, simple, black and white story; she would rather depict real life in all its various, glorious shades of gray. It’s true some might find her books a bit too dark, but if you’re ready for a change and feel the need to graduate from the usual cute and happy manga, definitely give Park’s books a try!
