Hellgate: London - Editor's Notes

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
When we first sat down to discuss creating a manga based on the, at the time, highly anticipated Hellgate: London video game, stories of warriors traversing the streets of The Great Wen strategizing the defense of the city with gritted teeth and burly bluster. But then we thought to ourselves “this is manga. What else characterizes manga better than TEENAGE ANGST.”

Now, please. Fans of demonic bloodlust do not fret. This is a story about teenage angst worthy of a blood and guts, supernatural action game. The teenage angst only serves to underscore the themes that the game already puts forth…if you think of London as a face of the world, the demons as pimples, and a Molten Edge Blade as a mighty powerful astringent.

To this project, I asked Arvid Nelson, the celebrated writer of Rex Mundi, which deals a lot with European historical mythos, and Jeong Mo “Brian” Yang, an artist who worked with me on TOKYOPOP’s first Star Trek book. The result is an emotional rollercoaster replete with a lot of juicy manga thrills, chills and, well, the scariest thing of all…teenage angst.

SERIES SYNOPSIS
In the year 2020, a demon invasion strikes several cities around the globe...starting with London, home to Temple University Rugby champ John Fowler and his family. In the days leading up to the invasion's climatic Battle of All Hallow's Eve, John and his sister Lindsey attempt to unfold the mystery behind a series of bizarre portents: an exhumed skeleton, a haunting apparition, and a powerful sword that they find in their attic. Solving the mystery, though, reveals something about their family that changes their lives forever.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
John Fowler
Diligent student, incredible Rugby player and hung up on his father’s death, John Fowler hardly ever gets into trouble. So it’s out of character when he agrees to pull a prank on with his friends on their archeology teacher. This leads to a sequence of events that ends up revealing a whole lot more about his character than he ever knew.

Lindsey Fowler
Goth metal chick with an axe to grind, she hates John’s goody two shoes attitude about his life. She drinks, smokes, parties and on occasion flirts with carnal sin. However, as John begins to face the horror in the looking glass, Lindsey can’t help but to glimpse as well, and what she sees terrifies her.
