When I woke up that morning it was light in my room. I still haven't gotten used to it because for as long as I can remember I awoke to darkness. Cold and hard, but also very comforting because I knew what was in the dark. There was Lady Kana, Lady Drusilla, Lord Hijiri, and my dear Master Kowru. They never pay me much mind. I've never been of much importance to any of them except my master.
I've known him ever since i can remember. When I first met them I thought they were angels even though i was only four. No matter how old I grow to be I will always remember that day.
It was cold and wet and mist had settled over the village I was living in. It was 1466. They came in through the front door of my family's home and took me away. That's all that I remember of that day but I know that I was missing my mother very, very much.
Lord Hijiri tells me that I cried every night and would always fall asleep in tears. I was even crying in my sleep. But after a week or two my lord came and told me that I would be living with him from now on. I was four then and I learned very fast in the first years that he taught me. Lord Hijiri trained me in the way I was to act around the people I was going to live with, serve, and protect.
After those first four years of training I was finally able to meet my new master. Lord Hijiri had been telling me all about Kowru. I gasped when I first saw him. He looked just a year older than me. He had gray brown eyes and messy, thick, black-brown hair. His skin was tinted bronze giving him a tanned look. He had a loose shirt and a pair of slacks on.
"Hello," he said.
I was so excited that I started speaking before I thought about what I was I going to say. "Hi!" I blurted out, "my name's Ion! It's very nice to meet you, sir!"
After I said that I noticed my mistake and looked anxiously at Lord Hijiri. But to my surprise he had a look in his eyes that said he was proud of the way I acted. I started wondering why he looked at me that way but right when I was about to ask him Master Kowru did something I would never have anticipated.
He grabbed my arm and more or less chanted, "Hey, Ion, let's go play! It's raining outside. It'll be fun!"
As we ran down the hall of the mansion we were in I wondered, "What a strange boy. I thought he would be like Lord Hijiri; refined, polite, serious, and strict." But he surprised me to be the exact opposite; fun and full of energy.
"Hey, Ion, Just to let you know my name is Kowru. Do you like rain? I do!" He said cheerfully.
"I love the rain," I admitted sheepishly. "How old are you, Kowru? I'm eight."
The he stopped. I thought that, maybe, I upset him but when he turned around he had more surprise than anger on his face.
"You're how old?" He stuttered out in a shocked voice.
"Uh...eight," I said weekly. "Does it bother you?"
"Well...no, but aren't you a little young to look so...old?" His question puzzled me. What did he mean that I looked old? Why would he think otherwise?
"No," I answered shortly, "I look just as I should for my age. How old are you?" I asked thinking that could be the problem which, of course, it was.
He put a proud look on his face and said, "I'm five-hundred thirty-nine. A lot of people think I'm really young looking for my age." The way he looked at me after taht made me feel like I was a new toy he just bought ans was wondering what he was going to do with it. "You wouldn't happen to be that human that my dad was telling about, would you?" he questioned suddenly.
"Yes, i think I am."
"Well that explains a lot. I thought I smelled something different in here. 'Guess it was you. So what do you know about this place," he said gesturing to the mansion.
"Absolutely nothing," I admitted.
"Really? If you want I can show you around, after we play! How 'bout it?"
He sounded so happy and jubilant that I couldn't turn him down like I didn't care (which I did) and he looked so expectant that I had to say 'yes'. And his eyes had look that was...lonely. I couldn't betray Master Kowru. So I nodded my head and we ran the rest of the way.
When we got to the door that would lead outside I stopped. The door was enormous! It was made of ancient oak and was carved with different designs that I'd never seen before.
"Wow," I whispered.
"What is it?"
"I've never seen anything so big," I blurted out.
He followed my gaze to the door. "It's nothing very impressive," he said in bored voice. "The front door is a lot bigger than this piece of junk," he said while kicking the door.
"Really? I can't imagine anything being so big," I stated, completely amazed by the design and size of the entry way.
"Yeah, well this isn't all that fun, staring at a door that's really not that great. Why don't we go outside while it's still raining?"
I noticed that he really wasn't that impressed by the door way. But the moment that he finished what he was saying I wasn't concerned with that any more. He looked so expectant and lonely that I couldn't just sit there and deny him his right to be obeyed.
"Alright!" I smiled at him and he smiled back. It took both of us to open the monster door. I was dumb struck again by the sight of the land that was beyond the threshold.
This garden was so green and beautiful. It had green mossy hedges surrounding giant ponds and fountains. All of the lawn was manicured to perfection. Master Kowru had also been right about it raining but he really understated it. It was pouring. And I really wanted to go out and run in it. I especially wanted to ply in the rain with Master Kowru.
I was dragged back to earth when Kowru pulled on my arm, me along with it, out into the pouring rain. "Come on! This is the best type of rain ever! It's kinda warm and it gets you really, really, wet!" He said while pulling me along.
Master Kowru was also right about the fact of the rain being warm and that it could get you really wet, fast. the he surprised me again by pushing me and splashing me with rain water from the puddles on the ground.
I got back at him and joined in this game he had stated. It was so much fun we got soaked to the bone and were laughing our heads off by the time we ran out energy and decided to go back inside and get dried off.
