I've noticed that with many mangaka, that most (if not all) of their characters are fragments of the artist. I know Clamp demonstrated that very well with Mokona being named after the chief artist Mokona Apapa, and in X, the character Sesshiro (I know I might not be spelling that right) was blind in one eye to symbolize one member of the Clamp team getting eye surgery, and Subaru was blinded in the other eye for the same reason. Most of their characters are named after other members as well...those who are not named after outdated cars that is. I've noticed it with other famous artists as well, but I like Clamp more, so I mentioned them.
But take a look at your own characters for a moment if you have them. Can you honestly say that there isn't part of your personality in theirs? Nothing in the way they act that somehow you wish you could be? I know when I make my characters, I draw myself on the inside most of the time and never know it. Either that, or you draw all your friends and/or families into it. I just thought it was fascinating that artists can make a world of characters from the fragments of their own hearts.

I certainly know that all of my protagonists are things that I wish I could be in one form or another...

Can't be helped; I'm only me after all. ;p Well, you always try to recreate a personality you've seen off of someone else, but in order for yourself to understand it, you have to base it off of your own experiences as well at SOME point(I guess). I'd say that yeah, pretty much every main character I'VE made resembles a small part of me, and not because I meant it to be either.

There's a little bit of my personality in my characters of course, combined w/ the influence of things I'm interested at ^^
