EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
I love pulp fiction.
No, not the Tarantino movie (although, I love that, too!). I’m talking about the literary genre after which Quentin named his watershed film. The “pulps,” as they were called, were filled with fantastic strange new worlds, bizarre technology, sensational action, and of course, a stalwart hero.
Pulp series like Doc Savage, The Shadow and the Conan series were all the offspring of classic fantasy novels by authors like Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They, in turn, provided inspiration for modern day filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas on films like Raiders of the Lost Ark.
As a kid, these books and films seized my young imagination like nothing else, and years later have yet to release their hold. And I’m not the only one.
Jeff Nodelman is a guy after my own heart. He, too, shares a love of all things pulp. I first got to know Jeff through a different project he was pitching to TOKYOPOP. Although that idea didn’t quite feel right for us, I had been looking for a creator who could tap into the pulp adventure genre that I was dying to work in, and I knew immediately that Jeff was my guy. I couldn’t have been more right <takes moment to pat self on back>.
Jeff and I had a conversation where I rattled through a litany of images, tropes and themes that I was hoping to see in the project. Then he went off for a bit and later delivered a rough outline for his proposed book. It had everything I’d hoped for—weird science, arcane secrets, globetrotting adventure, intense action, and in Dr. Dylan Oliver, a young hero we could all root for. What more could I ask for?

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Dr. Dylan Oliver:
A young scientific phenom, Dylan works for a top-secret government agency developing unimaginable technology. Having graduated from Harvard and MIT by his late teens, Doc never had the time, or interest, in developing the finer social skills most men of his age take for granted. Dylan never gave much thought as to what ominous ends his inventions might serve, until one tragic accident changes everything.
Lilly:
A member of Dylan’s scientific team, and the love of his life. Lilly is the only person to ever break through Doc’s hyper-intelligent, eternally pre-occupied exterior.
Rose:
Another member of the lab team, as well as Lilly’s older sister. Rose is a brilliant scientist in her own right, and much more pragmatic than the good doctor, who tends to let his intellectual curiosity and verve get the best of him. Rose is cute and sweet (if a bit of a “wallflower”), but she never fails to give as good as she gets within the “boys’ club” atmosphere of the laboratory.
Mo:
The third member of Doc’s lab crew, and possibly the best machinist/fabricator in the world. Although Mo comes from an incredibly wealthy Saudi family, he tries very hard (possibly too hard) to assimilate to what he sees as true American culture. Hence, the smart-alecky, slacker-dude persona he has affected.
Fitz:
Ex-professional Ulitmate Fighter, who now drives a flower delivery truck. Fitz’s man-mountain physique belies his philosophical nature. Fitz is Doc’s next-door neighbor, and out of concern for his friend he joins Doc and the team on their quest. Obviously of Samoan decent, people are often perplexed by his name and claims of Irish ancestry—although few have the nerve to question him about it.
