Adapted from the light novels written by Yashichiro Takahashi. Plot: Yuji Sakai is a typical high school student who expects that his life will carry on being exactly the same as everyone elses, plain and ordinary. However, this can not be the case as time suddenly freezes and the people around him are being engulfed by blue flames. Why? Because a large doll like monster is consuming their life energy. Until this moment it hadn't noticed Yuji and is surprised by the fact that he can move unlike the rest of the normal humans who are still frozen. Taking this as a great opportunity for a nice feast the monster starts attacking him.
However, Yuji is saved by a girl wielding a large sword with black attire and eyes the colour of flames. This girl introduces herself as a 'flame haze' and that Yuji is a 'torch'. Torches are temporary replacements for erased humans but after a period of time, they will vanish from existence and the memories of the living, meaning that Yuji is technically dead.Unfazed by this, Yuji befriends the strange girl and names her 'Shana' after her sword.
Expecting Yuji to slowly fade away like all other Torches do, Shana is surprised to find that Yuji is not a normal Torch, but instead a special kind called a "Mystes": he has a treasure inside him, known as a "Hougu", a device possessing special abilities of sorts, and an extremely powerful and valuable one at that. Shana resolves to protect Yuji from the Denizens, who would use the treasure to disrupt the balance of the world, and Yuji decides to join Shana in her fight.

Great anime, I'll definitely see it through to the second series which comes out next month. I also like the fact that even though this is more of an action rather than romance anime that they can make it more complicated than just 'he likes her' or 'she likes him' because even at the end of the series it's debatable. I also really grasped the concept of this story, although following a basic magical girl story line the plot was very interesting.
Where to watch: Veoh There's also one volume of this series out in the USA. (yet again, not over here in the UK)
