How to Breed the Best of the Giant Yellow Chickens...

Alright, first things first, you'll need to go and get yourself a chocobo lure materia. Without this, your chance at even seeing a chocobo let alone catching one is almost 0%. You can get this materia by talking to Chocobo Billy at the chocobo farm. It will cost about 2000 to 3000 Gil I believe.....If not, then I don't know. Anyway, you'll need this materia anyway to cross the swamp with the giant snake in it to get through the game. If you want, later, you can find this materia for free at the Chocobo Farm in the corner of the area somewhere.

Once you've gotten the Chocobo Lure materia, you'll need to buy a stable. At 10,000 Gil a piece, they aren't cheap, but you'll need two to get started. This is a pretty expensive thing to do in the game, and it can be very time-consuming, but it is worth the while once you get further in the game. Buy two stables and go catch a male chocobo, and a female chocobo. The levels don't really matter, but try to get something higher than a poor chocobo. You can see a chocobo's status by looking at it in its stable after asking Chocobo Billy to look at them. When you catch a Chocobo, it will appear in the ranch closing outside (where the deeeeer and the chocobos plaaaayyy.......sorry...). You need to ask Chocobo Billy to move them inside. This is another way to see a chocobos level. Move the two you want into a stable, and then buy another stable. You'll need the third one for the baby chocobo. Buy one, and then buy some nuts. You'll need to buy a Carob nut, or steal one. SAVE THE GAME OUTSIDE THE FARM BEFORE YOU MATE THE CHOCOBOS!!!!!!!! This will make it easier to try again if you don't get the right chocobo. All you'll have to do is restart the game and try again. If you don't save first and you don't get what you're looking for, then you'll have to wait awhile before you can mate those two chocobos again. Give the nut to the two chocobos when you mate them (talk to Chocobo Billy to do this). It will play the sleeping music and when that's done a chocobo will appear. If it's blue or green, keep it, and if not, then restart the game and try again. It doesn't matter now what gender or color the chocobo is now, but it will later when you try to get a black one. Green chocobos can cross mountains, and Blue Chocobos can cross or swim in shallow water. For each type of Chocobo, there is something that you can only get by using each one. I will tell you what they are and where to get them later. Once you have your Blue or Green Chocobo, you'll have to wait awhile to breed it (it's still a baby!), so go do some more things in the game. Chocobo breeding, in my opinion, is best started as soon as possible in the game (in disc two chocobo breeding will become available for you to do). This is because while you are waiting you can go and move on in the game, rather than sit around after beating it already until you can breed more chocobos. If you have something else to do, like another side-quest, then go ahead and wait until you beat the game first, but otherwise start this as soon as you can.

After waiting awhile, the green or blue chocobo grew up, and its parents can mate again. Buy or steal another Carob Nut, buy another stable, and mate the two yellow chocobos again. This time, you're looking for the exact OPPOSITE of the chocobo that you got last time. For example, if you got a Green female chocobo last time, you'll want to get a Blue male chocobo this time. Keep trying until you get the chocobo you need and ALWAYS SAVE THE GAME BEFORE YOU MATE THE FIRST TIME. After restarting the game you can just go and try again, but you have to save outside the chocobo farm before you try to breed a chocobo if you didn't already do so when you came back to the farm. Now you're getting closer to the gold chocobo. After getting the next chocobo you needed, go and get further in the game again, or do something else while you wait. You can't mate the baby chocobos yet, and you can't mate the parents again for awhile.

After waiting again, come back to the chocobo farm and buy another stable. You'll also need to buy or steal another Carob nut. Remember to save outside the farm before you start to mate the chocobos, and then go and mate the Green chocobo and the Blue Chocobo. This time, you're trying to get a Black Chocobo. These Chocobos can do everything they're parents can do. They can cross mountains AND cross or swim in shallow water. After getting the chocobo you need, you'll again have to wait awhile, but now you're in the final step of getting a gold Chocobo.

After waiting again for awhile, go back to the chocobo farm and buy the last stable. You might also have to release one of your other chocobos. You can only get up to 6 stables in the game, and you already used 5 but you need two more. Why do you need two more when you're only trying to get one gold chocobo? Because you're going to go and catch another chocobo. After getting two stables ready, go and catch another yellow chocobo, but this time make sure it's status is Wonderful. Great can also work, but it will be a lot harder to get a gold chocobo, and it will be a lot easier if you catch a Wonderful Chocobo. I like to get the Wonderful Chocobo from the Chocobo tracks on the west side of the Northern continent, but I believe you can get them near Midreel as well. Once you catch a Wonderful chocobo, make sure it's the opposite gender of the Black Chocobo that you have. If it's not the opposite gender, then you'll need to keep trying until you get a Wonderful Chocobo that is the opposite gender of you Black Chocobo. Once you get the chocobo you need, you'll need to go and steal a Zeio Nut. You can steal these nuts from goblins on a tiny forested island near the north-east area of the map. It should be a little more north of the continent with the Chocobo Farm, and a little south-east to east of the Northern Continent. Once you have this nut, return to the chocobo farm, save outside of it, and then go and try for a Gold chocobo. You'll need to breed the Black Chocobo with the new Wonderful Yellow Chocobo that you recently caught, and don't be upset if it takes longer to get than any of the other chocobos that you've gotten before. It might take you a little more than two minutes, or it might take you a little more than two hours, but you will eventually get one. Gold chocobos can go ANYWHERE in the game, except for maybe the quicksand outside of Gold Saucer. They can cross mountains, cross or swim in shallow water, and even cross or swim in deep water. Also, if you race chocobos to the S-rank at gold-saucer, it might help to increase the chances of getting the chocobo you need, but I never really did that. I raced them for fun, but they weren't always S-ranked when I bred them, so it's not necessary. As for the items you can get with your new chocobos, you can get the ???, ???, ???, and ???.

???-- This is found near the northern-most tips of the islands near Midreel. You can take a Blue or Black chocobo by highwind there and then ride it the rest of the way to a small cave, or you can just ride a gold chocobo there. Inside all of the caves you'll find a glowing light at the back of it, which is the item that you are trying to get.

???-- This is found by the Wutai area at the southern-most tip of the island/continent. You can take a Green or Black chocobo there by highwind and then ride it the rest of the way over the mountains, or you can just ride a Gold Chocobo there.

???-- This is found across a river that's a little north of the entrance to Mt. Corel. You can take a Black Chocobo there with the highwind and then ride it the rest of the way there, or you can just ride a gold chocobo there.

???-- This can be found on a tiny island not located on your map. The island is ONLY accessible by gold chocobo, because it is covered completely by forest, surrounded ENTIRELY by high mountains, and is somewhere in the middle of a bunch of deep, deep water. The island should be in the north-east area of the map, a little more east than the island with goblins on it that have the Zeio nuts. You can find it by using the highwind, then riding your Gold Chocobo over there, or you can just look for it with your Gold Chocobo.

The reason I used question marks instead of the names of the items you'll find is because I figured it will ruin half the fun that lies in the surprise of it all. If you want to ruin the surprises and look up the name of the items somewhere else, then go ahead. But for those like me who like a fun surprise every now and again, I decided not to ruin it for you. They are good items though, or you wouldn't have had to go through all of the Chocobo Breeding to get them. Another fun place to go to with Chocobos is the Chocobo Sage’s house. He sells good items there, even if they're expensive. His house is in the middle of the mountains on the Northern Continent somewhere.

When I was little, my older brother was playing FF7 and trying to breed the best of Chocobos, the Gold Chocobo. After 2 hours of no luck and me whining that I wanted to try, he gave me the controller and taught me how to play. He taught me what to do if I didn't get a gold chocobo, and what to do if I did. Then he said good luck and went to the other room. However, 2 minutes later, I called him back to ask what to do if I got the brown one. He just looked at me weird, took the controller and said thanks for getting a gold chocobo. It turns out I was pretty lucky with Chocobo breeding, and good at it too, from then on in the game. I was the best at anything that had to do with chocobos. And now I'll teach you how to get from a yellow chocobo, all the up to a gold chocobo. Prepare for a long day...... (Or week.....)
