how you ask? ...
Just by beating the sh*t out of them, everything that thoughens them up!
one example out of like ten exercises: stand against a wall, and let the other beat on your stomach and chest for one minute as fast as he can... i was training with my senpai (teacher) and he really let me have it ...
All the muscles hurt but none of my ribbs are bruized (sorry for the bad english) so i really respect my senpai ... just try and do that, beat somebody up without hurting ribbs or something

Yikes! That definitely sounds painful! I hope you aren't sore for long.
I feel your pain. I've been taking Karate for nearly 4 years now. It doesn't hurt half as much now as it did in the first few months. I guess that's because I work out in my free time, too.
