Eric Wights' art is a sight for sore eyes in the manga section of Barnes and Noble. Nothing against the anime-style art of most manga, but I personally prefer OEL authors to have a strong american-comic influence. It's one of the many factors that will eventually prove to everyone that, "no, we're not trying to copy the Japanese..." and that we have something valuable to offer to the comic market.
That said, it's quite a departure from what manga fans are accustomed to, so it may not be for everyone. But the majority of the art is, in fact, awesome. The style is very dark but very fun. Mr. Wight's cartoon-y style perfectly accustoms the story and keeps it from becoming too slow.
The writing is superb-- very witty and sarcastic, it perfectly reflects the main characters' views about the world around him. It's hard not too laugh at his laughably in-love parents and the vicious Frankenstein-bully at school.
If you like OEL manga, it's important for us, the consumers, to buy it to show our support to Tokyopop and their artists that we truly support American-made manga and to keep the creators from going homeless. So, here's my personal recommendation for "My Dead Girlfriend"; if it sounds good to you, please scrape together $10 and buy it. A manga as good as this deserves to sold-out.
