The Cause of the Pain

Thump. Ellena awoke with a start. “Owww” she muttered, her vision coming onto focus. “You okay kiddo?” called a familiar voice. “Yea I’m fine dad.” It was then she realized what had happened. “I just hit my head on the door, that’s all,” she clarified to both herself and her father. “Yea I ran over something but I don’t know what.” He added. Typical dad, Ellena thought, always was a reckless driver. “How close are we?” she asked. “I think about forty minutes.” He answered. Wow, I must have been out a long time, Ellena wondered. Ever since she was little Ellena suffered from insomnia.  she hardly got any sleep.  Ellena and her father were on their way to the lake house for the weekend. It was only about a 2 hour drive from their house in Maryland to Lake Anna in Virginia. It didn’t matter what the traffic was like or how fast her father was driving, the trip always took forever. She and her father had been going to the lake house every since she was a little girl. She always loved to go. She was currently 17 and the excitement of going to the lake house had never diminished. The lake house wasn’t very big, but it was a castle to Ellena. The house only had two bedrooms, one full bathroom and one small one, an average sized kitchen, and a small living room with a sofa, chair and TV. This didn’t bother her much because she spent most of her time outside either on the porch swing or on the docks. She loved the water. Her father always called her his little fish. They would spend hours in the water either fishing or swimming. And at night, after dinner, when the sun was going down they would sit on the dock drinking lemonade and Ellena would bring out her sketch book and draw the sunset. That was her favorite part. Suddenly “Burnin for You” by Blue Oyster Cult came on the radio, interrupting her train of thought. She relaxed and stretched her legs out in the back seat of the old Camaro. She began to gaze out the window and watched the scenery zoom by. It must have been late because Ellena could see no trace of the sun in the sky, only the bright full moon that lit up the world around the car. That’s when she saw it. Something moving outside. Ellena then began to look towards the front of the car. “Hey dad did you see….” But she trailed off. Out in the middle of the road was a man just standing there. Ellena’s father yelled in surprise. He went to swerve, but before he did it seemed like the world had suddenly gone into slow motion. Ellena saw the man disappear. Not just run off or move, literally disappear into thin air. Then the world picked up speed again and she saw her father swerve. The car flipped and everything went black.
