He's sitting nervously in the interigation room, waiting for the nice lady investigator to return. Devin hopes the police will take him seriously. It's his brother who's missing after all, not some one he doesn't know. It was his brother. He loves his brother, or more, rely's on him.
Devin is afraid of big spaces, out door places, Lions, and tigers, and bear. Oh my! He's afraid of almost everything that moves, including his own shadow. It stalks him where ever he goes, waiting for him to go to sleep so it can creep up and divour him in his sheets.
And sure, the lady seems nice enough, but she may think he's a psycho. She could be plotting to have the people from the loonie bin (the ones with the scary white jackets and the big white vans) come and take him away and lock him in a room of white, with white padded walls, and soft white floors. He doesn't really like the color white either, now that he thinks about it.
He plucks at the collar of his blue plaid shirt eagerly. He hopes the lady comes back, because if she doesn't, he'll have to leave for sure. Even now he thinks he should be gone. The clock in the corner of the room is ticking loud and proud, announcing each second that might be the white men coming to take him away to the white prison.
Devin tries to bite his nails, but he has already chewed them until they bled. His eyes dart around the room, and when finally the lady comes back through the door, he jumps in alarm. She waves and smiles encouraginly, and Devin smiles weakly back, with two fingers still in his mouth.
"I checked up on the name you gave us, you're brother?" She says looking up in case she is wrong.
"Yes." Devin's fingers slide out of his mouth leaving a small trail of drool from the corner of his lips to the bottom of his chin. "My very best brother."
The lady looks down again, uncertain, and continues. "His name didn't check out with any of the residents in this city."
The words fall into the air like a piece of chalk breaking in a silent room. "But, he, he must be..." Devin looks around wildly, trying to find something to rest his eyes on that might give him peace, but there's nothing. There is nothing but the officer and the cold steeliness of the room. He looks up meekly, eyes beginning to water.
"I'm sorry, but I looked, and there is no record of any Richard Keenes in the area."
Devin begins to shake. "He promised. He said he would never leave me..." His lower lip begins to tremble and the lady starts to stand out of her chair to comfort him, but only makes it half way out of her seat.
"He promised!" He stands up and pushes the table towards the lady, startling her. "He swore! That VILE, wicked, man, PROMISED ME!!" Devin begins to sob in gushing, apologetic gasps, as he reaches a trembling hand out to the lady. "He...he would never leave me. He must be here."
The lady (she drew her badge instinctly, and you now know her name is Audrey Haynes) moves around the table, cautiously working her way towards the distraught man. His eyes dart around the room franticly, searching, retreating, afraid. Audry reaches down and lightly touches Devin's hand. This startles him and he nearly falls out of his chair.
Audrey backs away and reaches the door, never daring to take her eyes off of the quavering mass before her. She searches for the door knob with her hand, finds it, and quickly opens and closes the door with her some how squeezing through in one swift motion. Her supervisor had taken the place infront of the two way mirror some time ago, and now turns to Audrey, who looks quite disturbed.
"What the hell was that? I thought you said he was harmless." The man said in an almost completely apathetic tone. It was early in the day, and according to Karl, it was still time for coffee, waking up, and smoking. He almost never went anywhere without an expensive, imported, cuban cigar.
Audrey runs her fingers nervously through her hair. "He was. When I first entered that room he was as timid as a sheep. The second I brought up his brother being out of town, he went balistic." She casts an uneasy glance into the mirror, at the still shaking Devin. There is absolutely none of the anger that had been present only moments before. He looks like a small, frightened child who has lost his mother in a big and unfriendly place.
Audrey looks back at Her superior and is about to say something when a thought strikes her. No, Devin might look like a lost child, but he sure doesn't act like one. Scared children always stopped trembling when they have found a police, but this guy, he's trembling less now that she is gone. He probably doesn't believe the rule that almost all children believe. Cops are the good guys.
"...and also, Rex will know what to make of it." Audrey returns suddenly back to the present at Rex's name. He is the burrows psychologist.
"Casey, we don't need Rex. You know just as well as I do that he makes up half of his diagnosis'." She is begining to become frusterated now. Audrey knows that this is a pointless arguement. The entire staff agrees that Rex isn't qualified, but they also know that there is no one to replace him.
"Audry, that's not true, and you know it. He is a highly qualified psychiatrist and the best we have." Casey says in a finalizing tone. Rex is the only one they have really, but Audrey isn't going to correct her superior. He sighs, and asks, "Did you at least get his name?"
Audrey digs into the pockets of her jacket. She has placed her badge back in the front pocket, and has to work her fingers around the notebook to separate the two objects. She flicks it open and quickly skims her finger down each page until she finds the one she wants.
"Devin Goyle...that's weird. Why wouldn't he have the same last name as his brother?" Audrey's brows furrow in confusion. Casey isn't nearly as concerned.
"I'm sure there's a good reason. I wouldn't be too surprised if it ended up that he didn't have a brother at all." Casey turns away and leaves Audrey to ponder. The sounds of chairs scraping against the floor, papers being shuffled, and the low murmer of light conversation nibbles at the corners of her ears as she peers through the one way mirror at the more or less relaxed Devin.
"Devin Goyle..." she whispers to no one inparticular. Audrey sighs, and marches off down the hall leading to the office. She has many things to do yet, and standing around letting a man (a man indeed!) cloud her thoughts won't rush her to the end of all her troubles.
On the other side of the one-way mirror, Devin sits and hums a light, yet edgy, tune to himself. The corners of the room arn't dark, but they might be a darker shade than the rest of the room. He studies the corners, waiting for some monstrosity to emerge from one, but of course, none do. He lets a small breathe out, and leans back in his chair.
Of course the monsters won't appear in a place like this, he thinks. The never show up where there is a chance of being seen. Nasty, cunning little monsters. Disgusting, repulsive bodies that shimmer and have skin with smaller peices of flesh moving underneath it. With their filthy glowering eyes, and their crokked knashing teeth. He shudders at the thought of them, feeling relieved at the same time. Not here. No, the monsters won't bother him here. If they tried then Mrs...Andrea? Mmmm, something like that, she will lock him away for sure.
Devin begins to sing quietly to himself. "Pitter patter goes the rain. Who is standing there in pain? Watching droplets as they gain speed and splash into the drain. On his heart there is a stain, slowly driving him insane. Though he's standing, it's still plain, he will drown beneath the rain."
great story! :D luv ur writing style :)
