Chapter 3: Bloodshed
I ran blindly through the forest, my escape hindered by the tears and sunlight.
“Sango come back.” Sesshoumaru’s voice was rough and gravelly, not that it would matter anyway since all I could hear was that blood rushing through me at an accelerated rate.
“Come back! It’s not safe!” Like it was any safer with him! He was gaining on me with an unnatural speed. I NEEDED TO GET AWAY! While searching frantically for some other sign of civilization I was hit by the sudden realization that all I had to do was say his name. His name was his own weakness!
“Sango!”
He was 50 feet away and getting closer by the second. I ran faster.
“SESSHOUMARU!” Yelling at the top of my lungs I finally saw a path and ran for it.
“Ugh…dammit…SANGO STOP!!” I could tell that he was in pain and mad as hell but I didn’t care. I was almost free.
“SOMEBODY HELP!! PLEASE!”
As I got closer to the end of the path I saw a house in the clearing that looked all too familiar. All this time I was in my stupid backyard. The Sacred Forest was not a place you just wondered around in you were never supposed to go in there. It was the resting place of spirits, demons and angels. I now realized just how dangerous it was. I stopped short when I saw that the back door was open.
“MOM! KOHAKU!”
I went in and looked around. The lights were on in the kitchen and there was day old food on the counter. The microwave kept beeping signaling that whatever was in there was done and the faucet was running. The family room was just as desolate as the kitchen. The television was on and Kohaku’s playstation was flashing the continue sign. Moldy ice cream was sitting on the floor and papers were scattered across the table. I looked outside and was the car in the drive way. Something was wrong. I knew they were here.
MOM! KOHAKU! WHERE ARE YOU?!?!”
No answer. I started to go up the stairs. The further up I went the colder the house became. I started to get this weird feeling in the back of my neck. I sensed someone watching me. I shook the feeling off and went to the first room on the floor, my brother’s. I slowly opened the door. I was assaulted by a wave of clothes and junk. The room smelled like hell and it was stuffy but other than that it was void of anyone.
“Kohaku where are you? This isn’t funny!”
I was starting to panic. Why wasn’t anyone answering and why was the backdoor open. The house is a mess and it was way too cold. Mom’s room was next. Wlaking down the hall pass my room, a wicked smell wafted to my nose. It smelled old and rotten like decaying food or animals. By the time I reached her room the smell was overwhelming. I started to feel lightheaded and my vision blurred. A feeling of apprehension crawled up my spine and I had to force myself to open the door.
“SANGO!!”
I froze. I had forgotten about leaving him in the woods and now he was coming up the stairs. He was surprisingly light on his feet considering I didn’t even hear him come in. I darted into the room, closed then locked the door. He had just got to the door as I was locking it.
“Sango open the door. I won’t hurt you. Just open the door. I would do it myself but I’d rather not scare you more than I already have.” His voice was calm and smooth. None of the past anger even lingered there. I ignored him.
I turned around and jumped. My mother was lying in bed with the covers over her. The only thing that was visible was her jet black hair. I looked around and saw that everything was the same as it had been when I left two days ago. It was like she never got up the day I left but that wouldn’t be true. She would have noticed I was gone; she would’ve called the police to search for me.
“Mom?”
She didn’t answer. I walked towards the bed, flipped the covers off and gasped. On the bed was a concave decayed version of what my mother once was. Her glossy hair was now lifeless and brittle, her skin a sickly unusual purple. Her warm hazel eyes were never to look at me with love and affection; they’d never see another day. I was dimly aware of the fact that Sesshoumaru had entered the room. With trembling fingers I reached out to touch my mother one last time. The decayed hands of my mother reached out and grabbed me. Screaming hysterically I tried to break her grip but it was too strong.
“Sango my dearest, be a good girl and go to Naraku. He wants you over for dinner…….I’m sure he’ll enjoy you. Heh heh heh!” I froze and my blood ran cold. The corpse turned and looked at Sesshoumaru. In a whispery voice void of emotion it said,
“Hello dog. Is your name still giving you problems? Poor puppy, it’s a shame you’ll never live to hear your full name.”
She smiled in such a way that her face became distorted and cracked. As the numbness started to drain away I started struggling to get my hand free. I finally wrenched her cracked fingers away from my wrist, the momentum making me fall back. Sesshoumaru caught me before I hit the hard wood floor. In his arms I screamed. My anger, sorrow, fear and pain ran down my face in rivers. Sess rocked me back and forth in his arms and whispered soothing words to me in a language that I did not understand. I don’t know how long this lasted, but I was glad I had someone to comfort me through this, even if he was a demon.
“Sango I know you’re in pain right now and I’m sorry that there’s nothing I can do to fix it, but we need to leave.” The sudden sound of his voice brought me out of the imaginary hell that was slowly engulfing me. Looking up at him I saw that he was staring at something I couldn’t see.
“Sang I need you to go downstairs and wait for me there. Can you do that for me?” His eyes were full of concern and protectiveness as he said this.
“Yeah. Why do you insist on talking to me like a child?” He looked at me with a hint of bemusement when I said this. We walked t the door and down the hall but Sesshoumaru stopped there.
“Why’d you stop?”
It was then that I noticed he was still in his demon form. I tried to suppress the shudder that made its way through my body but failed. His eyes narrowed at the movement. This was no time to be afraid. After all he was, at least for the moment, my only means of protection.
“I just want to check something out before we go. I’ll be down in a moment.”
With that he turned and left. I wanted to follow him but at the same time I didn’t want to die. I went down stairs and sat on the living room couch. It was then that my mind started to comprehend what had happened.
My mother is dead and if my instincts were right Naraku killed her. And Kohaku is-
KOHAKU ISN’T HERE! Maybe he’s at a friend’s house. He could still be alive. I started to smile at the thought but my thoughts were cut off by a crash from upstairs.
“STOP! PLEASE! PLEASE DON’T KILL ME!!”
