PAGE TWO
Panel One: Shot of Sama's dad's army medals. I see this as an overhead shot with Sama in the bottom left corner of the page, leaning over this box of medals. Sama is hiding somewhere, so we need to sell the fact that he's looking at something he shouldn't be ... and that he's not doing it out in the open. What if he was looking at them under a blanket with a flashlight? That way the upper half of the page could bleed to black.
Alternately, this is just a still life of the box of medals, obviously disrupted and played with. I'd like to be careful and not make this so definitely U.S. medals. I don't want this book to be so focused on America or Americans. Sama should have the ability to seem like he's from any country. But the importance that I'm getting rather attached to is that Sama is a WAR CHILD. So these medals should looks official and military and, in a weird way, mean. Just the kind of thing a little boy would WANT to play with!
Jake did draw a number of different versions of this page. We liked them all, but decided this one had the most tension.
