The Legend of Sayonara
Long ago, in the city-state of Sayonara, a king sat on his throne. King Touya was a wonderful king. All of the people lived together in peace. The city-state was said, to be protected by the magical blade of Sayonara, which would arise, and defend its city-state, in the hands of a warrior. Any being who opposed it and its master were always quickly disposed of. The city-state was protected, and nobody had attacked Sayonara since that fateful day the blade had been made. Sayonara was supposedly, invincible.
But some people thought otherwise. Another city-state, Mirian, had doubts. The King, Archel, was an evil man, and often tortured his people. But, he was amazing. King Archel had conquered many city-states, and had never, in his life lost one war, not once. So he sent a spy, Yue, into Sayonara.
Yue, disguised as a traveler, was greatly surprised when he entered the gates of Sayonara. Instead of near silent people crowding the streets, there were laughing children, gossiping women and singing men. All were working, but they were happy. In Yue's heart, something stirred. It was a feeling that he couldn't believe, for he thought that had been dragged out of him when he had pledged himself to King Archel.
The spy continued walking. Suddenly, he felt eyes watching him. Yue concealed his actions by looking at a pot as he looked to see who was watching him. His eyes caught on a billowing white figure standing before the temple.
The king had been talking to Yukito, his priest, when the magic blade had warned him that a person had entered the gate and would be of great importance to the future. King Touya immediately went to the arch of the temple and looked for a foreigner. When he caught sight of Yue, he had watched him for quite a while, and then decided to make a new friend, for there would be a time, he knew, when friends would be what kept Sayonara standing. So, King Touya beckoned to a soldier and told him to take the foreigner to the temple.
When Yue arrived at the temple, he immediately memorized everything in the temple. The king sat on his throne, and beside the throne, was the blade, it glimmered beautifully at King Touya's side. That was when the king boomed, "Welcome friend, and how are you this fine day?" Yue jolted as the king said friend. Had he meant it? Or was he mocking him?
Bowing stiffly, he said," Good day, your majesty, I am well." The two men continued to talk, and the more they talked the more Yue felt welcome in Sayonara. So unlike Mirian, this was a place where Yue felt he belonged. He also felt like he needed to help the city-state of Sayonara, and tell them of the war Mirian was going to start; but he couldn't, Yue had to keep his pledge to King Archel.
That night, when the spy was living in a guest house the king had found him, a messenger from King Archel told him that the next night; King Archel was going to kill King Touya in his sleep, conquering Syanara in the process. Yue was to help him get into the king's chambers. Yue's heart was beating heavily by the end of the message. He bid the messenger good night and closed the door.
Yue raced to the temple, it was morning, and he hadn't slept a wink, for he was deciding on whether to help the king, or keep his vows to King Archel. Yue chose Mirian. That night, he would sneak King Archel into the king's chambers and past the guards. The spy was on his way to King Touya's chambers at the moment, and when he got there, he would find places to conceal King Archel incase of…unfortunate things.
That day passed quickly, and night soon came. Yue paced in his small mud brick house, waiting for the arrival of King Archel. He needn't wait long. For King Archel soon came, eager to kill and conquer. They soon left after he arrived, for they needn't discuss plans, their plan was simple. Almost too simple, but they would live through it; or so they thought.
As the two men snuck their way past the guards and to King Touya's chambers, King Touya was being warned by the magical blade of Syanara. The blade showed him an image of the king of Mirian, and Yue, creeping through the corridors, very close to his chambers. And in King Archel's hand, was a dagger, meant to pierce the heart of King Touya. When King Touya watched this scene in the blade's reflection, a cold feeling crept into his heart. He hid behind the door and waited for the two men to enter. When they did, he killed the king first, swiftly, and the man dropped to the ground. As he closed in on the traitor, Yue babbled about not wanting to betray him and actually wanting to stay at Sayonara. But all those words were lies to King Touya. For he had been betrayed by this man, and because of him, Sayonara would never be quite as happy, or cheerful again.
That night, so long ago, was an important event for Sayonara. Most of the citizens remembered the old cheerful king, when he was so happy and relaxed. Now, he was serious, and laws had been made, with cruel punishments, that would allow one warning, and then…death.
But there is another part of the legend that said, "One day, Sayonara's happiness will return once more, when a young warrior arose, with the blade of Sayonara in hand."
