Think about it (A Rurouni Kenshin post)

Do you consider it shojo or shonen?

Yes, it's filled with plenty of blood and action and crazy psycho killers at a lot of points in the story, but consider the fact that it's title is "The Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story".

I've heard people say that it swings closer to shojo, and when you think about some aspects of it, it is kinda girly (even Kenshin looks girly), but then again, if it were considered shojo, you'd be forced to say that it strays a lot from the stereotypes of normal shojo.

And then again, when you read it, you feel (or at least I've felt) that a lot of the things that Watsuki goes into detail about (like character backrounds, or the thoughts of the characters) are more from a guy's perspective.

And well... I can't think of anything else at this point (I swear I need some freaking coffee). I'll probably edit this and go into more detail later, but until then, I hope it makes you think (and I hope I can start a fun little debate too).

You see, I've always considered it Shoujo - though as it turns out, gender is a non-issue with fans, but for the sake of the topic, I digress - in that while the action is there, but the whole settup is somewhat romantical. The whole idea of a samurai wandering, though in this case settling down and THEN, changing peoples lives, fighting, and making friends, blah blah blah, sounds Shounen, sure, but when you take into account the art, the way the characters interact at times, the romance and fluff is laid on thicker than your typical story like say, One Piece or Naruto, and especially Dragon Ball. The whole deal is, what I consider, a "shoujo" story with "shounen" overtones. But, grar, I really don't like forcing stories into seperate genres. That and I haven't seen nor read Kenshin in years, not since Toonami and I was but a kid.

About the romance it wasn't really fluffy and Watsuki didn't really get very in depth with it. That's how I feel anyway, since I read a lot of shojo and I kinda can make a comparison. I'd say it's probably between, a one of a kind story. :D I love Rurouni Kenshin.

Hm... I've wondered about that before, too. Kenshin is pretty much a pretty boy, and there is an awful lot of romance involved, both with Kaoru and in his past. Even Yahiko has more involvement with romance than the typical shonen protagonist. However, the art style is closet to shonen and it does have more emphasis on action, so I'd say it is definitely shonen. It's just a shonen love story, I guess! ^_^;
