Jeremy Rosen
Aged 25, our protagonist is an insurance claims investigator for Occidental
Insurance. His fianceé has recently left him, and he hasn't been taking
it well. She may be over him, but he's not over her. He's bored with his job
and has been slacking off at work, and as a result, he's now on really shaky
ground at the office.
Jeremy's lonely, keeping mainly to himself except for a small circle of friends,
and the fact that he lacks any real self-confidence certainly doesn't help
matters. He's an extremely nervous individual who's almost petrified with stress.
He goes through life trying not to upset the status quo. He's NOT a risk taker
and has difficulty making up his mind, leading many people to accuse him of being
wishy-washy. He does what he's told, and wouldn't dream of rocking the boat.
While he's not unlikable, he's hard to get to know, and since he's not
particularly interesting, no one bothers to make the effort.
Jeremy does have several strengths as a character. He's loyal to the few friends
he has. He's not passive to the point where he's lost his sense of self-preservation,
and there is a line on how far he's willing to be pushed. He will, eventually,
push back. Most importantly, he has a good nose for sensing when something isn't right,
and it's this very ability that makes him a good claims
investigator...provided he finds proper motivation.
In short, Jeremy Rosen is very much an "everyman." There's nothing remarkable
about him in any way. He's average, with a normal career, the usual mix of
relationships, and very recognizable and familiar problems. In other words,
he's very much like you or me.
Jake Fabercaster
Also 25, Jake may be Jeremy's best friend (the two went to college together)
and a fellow insurance claim investigator, but the two couldn't be more different.
Jake is confident to the point of cockiness, never late with a tasteless joke or
tacky pickup line. He's a sexual harassment case waiting to happen. He's popular
with the guys, but he's really only interested in the ladies (even if they're not
always interested in him).
He's handsome, well built, and very well off. However,
since he works for the same company that Jeremy does, doing the very same job,
the source of his wealth is a bit of a mystery. Jake is intelligent and innovative.
His friends are important to him, but when all is said and done, the only
person who matters to Jake is Jake.
Dawn
Jeremy's 23 year old ex-fianceé. Dawn, like Jake, went to college with Jeremy,
and the three of them have remained pretty close since. Emotionally, she's over
her breakup with Jeremy, and has begun to move on. Although the breakup has
undeniably put a strain on their friendship, she still cares about Jeremy,
but she realizes the necessity to distance herself from him. She remains
very close to Jake, and if anything, their friendship has only grown stronger
since she called off her engagement to Jeremy, and it's very possible that Jake
and Dawn have become romantically involved...and of course, Jeremy doesn't
have the slightest clue.
Dawn is beautiful and young. In short, she's a knockout. In fact, one might wonder
how she got involved with a schlub like Jeremy in the first place.
Ron Klamenski
The 45 year old Claim Supervisor at Occidental Insurance, Ron is Jeremy and
Jake's boss. Tough, abrasive, and often a smart ass, he's not the type of
boss to put up with anything less than complete and utter dedication from
his employees. He expects them to give 120%, and if they give anything less
than that, Ron gets awfully cranky. Jeremy is the most recent example of this.
He's been slipping at work, which has placed him within Ron's crosshairs. Jake,
on the other hand, can do no wrong as far as Ron's concerned.
I love it. Really!
