For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a Jim Henson fan. Some of my earliest memories were of watching The Muppet Show on TV with my father. I remember going to see The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper in the local movie theater with my parents, and of course, there’s always been Sesame Street, which my own son now watches and laughs at, in much the same way that I did as a tyke.
I’m a fan of all Jim Henson’s work, but my personal favorites were his dips in the fantasy genre. I absolutely love The Dark Crystal. Even now, it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. However, it was his follow-up film, Labyrinth, that really sealed the deal for me. While The Dark Crystal took us on a journey to a fantasy world, Labyrinth brought the fantasy world to us by allowing it to spill over into our world. For the first time, we saw the Jim Henson Creature Shop’s elaborate fantasy creatures (inspired by the work of legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud) interacting with human actors. And for a boy of ten, it made it seem entirely plausible that one day a goblin could come running out of my closet and I could find be pulled into the world of Labyrinth myself.
And now, twenty years later, I have. Return to Labyrinth is the official continuation to Jim Henson’s visionary film. Our story has been written in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company, and our script is by the uber-talented Jake T. Forbes, who may just be a bigger Labyrinth geek than I am. The lively manga art is by the gifted Chris Lie, and our beautiful cover comes courtesy of Alichino manga-ka, Kouyu Shurei. This time, Toby (the baby in the movie) is our protagonist, and we learn that Jareth’s interest in Toby in the film may have been more than just his way of getting Sarah into the Labyrinth. (But never fear, Sarah/Jareth fans! We have some stuff that you’re going to LOVE coming up in later volumes.)
Working on this first volume has been a fun trip into a world that I loved so much as a child. It’s a journey I’ve waited a long time for, and at last we’re ready to depart. Care to join me?

INUCHIC15~ It comes out Nov. 4, 2008! I'm so excited
*sigh* The story seems promising, but the art isn't. I don't really care if the artist is new at this or not. They should have selected other artist for the job. Now, I'm not saying the artist is HORRIBLE, what I'm saying is that his art style looks better for Naruto, or Bleach. For a Labyrinth manga I was hoping for art style similar to Princess Ai's Misaho Kujiradou or Tinity Blood's Kiyo Kyujyo.
When is Volume three coming out?
I Love labyrinth well i love the movie and i have a crush on the goblin king have had one on him sence i was a little girl ...blushes... i also recomende if you like labyrinth that you also buy fraggle rock seasons dvds and the dark crystal, the neverending stories movie series 1,2,3 i hope they make it in to the movie sequel lets hope cross our fingers hold our breath but not to long lol ^_^
I love Labyrinth... Considering that my dad named me after the goblin king.
I love Jennifer Connelly :)
i agree with lika about the art, but guys do buy this. i wish they would have had kouyu do the art in it[ the creator of alichino, and the person who drew the front cover. but the stiory is good. that bummed me out i saw the cover an said i have to get this and opened it up an my happieness faded an may have died a bit, i really hope that kouyu makes her own version X3
After the end of volume 2, my unhappiness with the direction Sarah went in has wained & now I'm quite curious to see how things work out in volume 3. No offense to the artist, but they should have gotten a female illustrator or even a guy who knows how to draw art that appeals to women. You think men are going to buy this book?
I love the book of Return to the Labyrinth. Like what Laura Wolf said, I also hope this would lead to another movie.
Love the story, love the drawings, if anybody can learn me to draw like that please let me know!
When is Vol.3 being released? I love the storyline so far.
Perchased the 2nd book and look forward for more volumes which hopefully may lead to another movie! Besides I read the 1st book at the book store and enjoyed that one too!
I bought both the 1st and 2nd books and they are really good!
Does anyone know how to read the online chapters marked VIP? I'm new hear, and I'm currently obsessing over this series
i absolutly love the movie!
I would have to say that I was uber excited to read this manga beings such a fan of the movie, The cover art was amazing as was the story however the art inside was disapointing.
My sons name is Jareth from the first movie.
Personally this is an good manga. Though that art isn't as good as I hope, keep in mind that this guy is learning how to colour and draw the manga way as his other works were American styled. Kept it going and continued the story.
Great! I love the movie and the manga
I have this book and am now waiting for some money so that I can buy the second. It is a pretty good fanfic and makes me want to read the actual book that the movie was based on. Jareth is so....-swoons- especially in this book because he looks so much younger than in the movie.
Sounds ok and is acceptable.
Mmm, sequel? Not quite. An acceptable fanfiction told in manga format, and hooooow can I say no to Jareth in any form? Meowwwwwwwwww!
anyone know when vol three is due out? I can't find a release date anywhere.
At first when I read this book I was like "Is this Jake Forbs an idiot or what but after I found out about Jareth going to Sarah I Felt I MUST continue Reading all in all though I LOVED IT!!!

I just read this one and its soo awsom... but I have to know what happens next!
Yes, JSOC, that's Jareth, The Goblin King, on the cover of Return to Labyrith volume1, the on holding the crystal, not wearing the crown. Sorry if this comes up twice, I had problems with the first one.
Yes, JSOC, that's Jareth on the cover, the on holding the crystal, not wearint the crown.
I want the rest out I want to see some sara and jareth moments now
ive gotta get this...
I very ineresting managa. . . . I love it :P
Is that ing in cover as Goblin king?
My absolute favorite movie of all time! I wish all the other books were out DAMMIT!!!
i like it it is a cool manga to read^_^
Finally! I have always wondered what would have happened after the movie ended. Especially when I saw the owl. If it's anything like the movie, I am going to enjoy it completely! Thank you so much for doing this! It is very much appreciated! ^__^
I adore Labyinth. It's on of my favorite movies (I also lke David Bowie). When I found out there there was a book that was going to continue the movie, I was excited. I rushed out to buy it. The cover is so beautiful! I was very happy with the artwork and writting inside as well. I eagerly look forward to the 2nd volume. Aslo, this is the first manga I ever owned.
This is actually my first real manga. I tried reading ones that have shows, but for some reason I can't really. I really loved the movie (it scared me when I was very little, though) and I was intrigued and bought it. I am really enjoying it and very much would like to read the next volume. I was kind of worried that Sarah and her friends wouldn't be in it, but yay! There they are! Probably won't see what Moppet looks like without that mask for a while.
Love the Labyrinth growing go and David Bowie as the Goblin King. So cool that there is a manga. Love the cover art. Jareth looks really cool!!!
I'll probably pick this up soon, I recently found the movie on DVD. Fun memories ^_^
is someting wrong? i can't read it. the site won't let me
I owns it already ^^ It's sooooo good! I just lent it to a friend to read. I really love how it brings back a lot of things from the movie, but it has tons of new things too!!!!
i couldnt get it either
well it's looks like i'm going to have to wait, cas their seems to be problem with the online manga link to the manga player thingey. anyway this does look good and i did like the movie.
omg i loved the moive i cant wait to read it!
YAY!!! I never thought they would think of creating a manga of Labyrinth!!
Well i picked it up--i didn't buy it cause i just didn't have enough money-- i have a question though.... why didn't the original artist of the manga do the cover? That just seems really odd that they used a different artist to do the cover. It's ALMOST like false advertising, not saying that Chris Lie's art isn't up to par (it is!) but they are totally different styles and it just doesn't connect very well. Especially if someone is this online and may not know that its a collaboration. i am particularly fond of the work inside because its unique and not the norm when it comes to manga..and that is probably what will make me keep reading....that is as long as they don't make jareth gay or anything *grumbles* i like my share of shounen-ai but this is a classic story that i don't feel should be tampered with in such ways...probably because i keep thinking "david bowie!" and i...love...him : ) No one could pull of the role of jareth as well as Mr. Bowie thats for sure.
IIIH!!! GOBLIN KING!!! WIIII!!! Must get my mitts on this manga... I love the Labyrinth, I love how David Bowie portrayed the Goblin King, and I can't wait to read it! Oh happy, happy, joy, joy!
Well i may take a gander at this--consider anything with any sort of reference to Mr David Bowie is just...spectacular. i am however getting rather woozy at the thought someone is going to try and make this shounen-ai, which would make me die a little inside. I hope that i'm not correct in assuming this. The art is gorgeous though, and i must admit that the artist can draw very well (according to the cover) and the very slight resemblance to David Bowie is enjoyable nonetheless ; ) (it is infact the very thing that drew me to this site to begin with--i saw him and i was like..WOW that kind of looks like Mr Bowie. Nice work.
wow lots of kids on here who cant spell... (perhaps thats why they didnt like it... not being able to read is quite an ailement...) i loved it. i think it is well suited to become the sequel of the film. the goblins are as funny as they were the first time round, and just the fact that jareth's charecter is(or was) David Bowie in the film is exciting enough! but i love the story. the artwork is good enough to portray the story, and the people leaving coments on here saying it isnt so say it as if they could do it them selves(they wish.) hurry up with part 2 though!!!
The movie Labyrinth was never made to be manga, period. This is really little more then bad fanfic with a booring storyline. Who even cares about Toby anyway? How bloody booring.
the front cover is hot! the insides..almost like wtf
Yeah... um... definate disappointment, i'm still a huge fan of the movie though (ZOMG! so pretty...)
As a huge fan of the movie I ran out and bought the manga as quick as I could because the cover art was totally gorgeous! But I was disappointed that the rest of the art inside wasn't the same. The quality of the art has its ups and downs, depending on the scene. The story wasn't that bad and I'm excited for the next volume. I do hope the art improves. One thing I loved the most were the subtle nods towards the movie and the Henson world.
Amazing!!! Volume 2 is due to be released on October 9th! (This was taken fromt he Barnes and Noble website)
I can't wait to get this; I just hope I'm not disappointed like many people say I will be. (I'm a huge Labyrinth & David Bowie geek.)
i wish the second volume would come out soon i read that book yesterday i thought it was okay. they draw jareth pretty good almost like a movie version put into a drawing.
Such a long delay for the second volume... =(
Oh and I personally loved it.
Wow, there are a lot of very oppinionative people on this site aren't there. Anway I don't mind the art. The cover was deffinately more beautiful than the rest of it but that doesn't mean that the rest of the art is bad, it's just not as good. As for the story I feel bad for the writers. They had to follow up a wonderful story and live up to all of our expectations of them. No matter what anyone says I'm going to give it a chance.
I think there's something wrong with the character bios here. I just checked and Esker speaks in the manga. Why does the bio say he can't speak? He talked in the manga, it's only once but it's there. And Sarah would be at least twenty eight if this is thirteen years after she was fiftene. She certainly was not thirteen in The Labyrinth.
I have been a fan of Labyrinth for a very long time. The cover art for The manga is beautiful. It's true that the internal art work isn't as good but it's still a charming story. The portrayal of Jareth is accurate to the film. From the part where Toby says 'You said you wouldn't mess with me anymore!' and Jareth quips 'I said I wouldn't HELP you anymore. There's a difference' to the way he abruptly leaves his own kingdom. It's true that the story does read like a fan fiction. Many fan fictions have been named Return to Labyrinth over the years but considering how many fan fictions Labyrinth has spawned a real sequel was bound to feel like a fan fiction of some sort. I love the manga just so long as Jareth doesn't turn into anything or die before the trilogy is complete. And I've been told that Sarah plays a bigger part in the second volume.
I love the movie and I really like this manga!
The second volume comes out either on October 13 or 31 and I can't wait until then...:)
The art within the manga is very poorly drawn. Although I've heard they have switched artist for the second volume, so I am hoping that he will understand the need for more detailed art(I mean it's a Henson story guys! detail is needed!). The story is also very poor, although I blame part of it on the art, if you can't string pannels along very well it makes the story very boring and slightly complicated.
I am curious about this manga but I hope it doesn't become a movie. 1986 has come and gone plus no one can play the Goblin King other than David Bowie and hes not as sexy as he was when he was younger. So lets just enjoy what tokyopop has given us. I do like the art but wish it was a little more unique.
