Return to Labyrinth Volume 2

Still reeling from the announcement that Jareth has handed over control of the Labyrinth to Toby, the Goblin Kingdom is in an uproar. Panjan Spittledrum, the Goblin Mayor, had assumed that he would be Jareth's successor, as had the coldly beautiful Mizumi, Queen of the Moraine Kingdom. Both vow to assist Toby in his preparation for assuming the Goblin throne, but can such a power-hungry pair be trusted?
Editors Intro Character Info Reviews
Line

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a Jim Henson fan. Some of my earliest memories were of watching The Muppet Show on TV with my father. I remember going to see The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper in the local movie theater with my parents, and of course, there’s always been Sesame Street, which my own son now watches and laughs at, in much the same way that I did as a tyke.

I’m a fan of all Jim Henson’s work, but my personal favorites were his dips in the fantasy genre. I absolutely love The Dark Crystal. Even now, it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. However, it was his follow-up film, Labyrinth, that really sealed the deal for me. While The Dark Crystal took us on a journey to a fantasy world, Labyrinth brought the fantasy world to us by allowing it to spill over into our world. For the first time, we saw the Jim Henson Creature Shop’s elaborate fantasy creatures (inspired by the work of legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud) interacting with human actors. And for a boy of ten, it made it seem entirely plausible that one day a goblin could come running out of my closet and I could find be pulled into the world of Labyrinth myself.

And now, twenty years later, I have. Return to Labyrinth is the official continuation to Jim Henson’s visionary film. Our story has been written in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company, and our script is by the uber-talented Jake T. Forbes, who may just be a bigger Labyrinth geek than I am. The lively manga art is by the gifted Chris Lie, and our beautiful cover comes courtesy of Alichino manga-ka, Kouyu Shurei. This time, Toby (the baby in the movie) is our protagonist, and we learn that Jareth’s interest in Toby in the film may have been more than just his way of getting Sarah into the Labyrinth. (But never fear, Sarah/Jareth fans! We have some stuff that you’re going to LOVE coming up in later volumes.)

Working on this first volume has been a fun trip into a world that I loved so much as a child. It’s a journey I’ve waited a long time for, and at last we’re ready to depart. Care to join me?

I just got this book yesterday and I'm already done with it. I so can't wait till volume 3. I wish there would be more than 4 volumes though, mainly because I love it so much and don't want to ever stop reading more

I thought the artwork was excellent when compared with the puppet design from the movie. Granted the human design is not the most realistic artwork, but that comes with the manga territory.

23.06.2008 07:58 PM

I really like the story line. I agree with Ghostdoll though, the art work in this manga is more suited for Bleach or Naruto, not really Labyrinth. I still like the series and the character stories, I just wish you had gotten someone like the guy who did the cover art to do the whole thing.

19.06.2008 02:23 AM

*sigh* The story seems promising, but the art isn't. I don't really care if the artist is new at this or not. They should have selected other artist for the job. Now, I'm not saying the artist is HORRIBLE, what I'm saying is that his art style looks better for Naruto, or Bleach. For a Labyrinth manga I was hoping for art style similar to Princess Ai's Misaho Kujiradou or Tinity Blood's Kiyo Kyujyo.

I CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG!!!! i miss jereth..... I'm gonna go cry now.......

27.03.2008 01:15 PM

Ooooooooooooooooh please!!! November 2008?! It´s too much time... like a year! Plus I´m from Costa Rica so is going to take an extra month for the order to reach here. Now I´m gonna have to buy other manga to kill time... geez... I really love the history, sure it has a gap or two but nothing serious... Well... better sit and wait...

05.03.2008 08:29 PM

Volume three is out in November 2008 (see gobblin.net). So, I'm slow on the uptake, but I just realized that Moppet is probably the "ablation" Jareth had Mizumi create shortly after Sarah left the Underground thirteen years ago. An ablation is defined as the removal of material from an object; I think Sarah broke Jareth's heart when she left and he (in poor judgement) had Mizumi take something from her. I will go as far as to guess that that ablation (Moppet) is Sarah's ability to love. If this is the case, Jareth is going to have hell to pay when Sarah finds out! I guess we'll learn more in November!

28.02.2008 01:31 AM

WHEN IS #3 OUT?! The first book sucked, the movie powned, and the second book was... satisfying. But when will the third be out???

21.02.2008 12:07 AM

Jareth x Sarah!!! WHOO_HOO!

14.02.2008 01:10 AM

hey, I can only read the first chapter- is that on purpose or...

14.02.2008 01:08 AM

I'm rereading volumes one and two and just have a couple of questions that I wanted to get out there. My first question may be dumb, but does everyone think Moppet is a goblin or can they tell she's a human wearing a mask? Because I would think it's pretty obvious that she's a human wearing a mask. It seems like she must hide her face because she knows she looks like Sarah; I could argue that she hides it because she feels out of place for not being more gobliny-looking, but there are plenty of human-looking folks around (Jareth and his court from the movie, Mizumi and her daughters, etc.) so it doesn't seem like she would be an outcast just for looking human. She sleeps maskless and at least the little alarm clock critter, Dingle, has seen her face. If everyone really thought she was a goblin, wouldn't he have mentioned it to someone that she's an imposter? At any rate, I don't think that was very clear. Moppet must be some essence of Sarah that was left behind in the Underground when Sarah left, which is why Sarah seems to have led a rather uneventful and potentially unfulfilling life since she returned to Normalville; she lost an important part of herself in the Labyrinth. Also, I am thoroughly convinced now that Jareth was and is in love with Sarah. Or at least the idea of her, but I'm hoping it's the real her. I think the "true love's kiss" referred to in the prophecy will be between Jareth and Sarah.

11.02.2008 04:15 AM

I was so mad at the ending that I actually threw it! I think I know what is going to happen, except 4 those little lizards and the queen of cups. Anybody think that crazy woman is going to try 2 kill Toby? I don't think Jareth and Sarah r going 2 get 2gether. (Here's hoping)

04.02.2008 04:09 PM

I just want to know what is up with Sarah and Moppet's connection. ....and the cliffhanger at the end made me want to throw the book out the window! I think the 3rd comes out in October '08. I heard rumors about it so don't take my word 100%.

01.02.2008 06:58 PM

May Jim Henson Rest In Peace.

12.01.2008 06:10 PM

when's part 3 coming out???? Though most of the first two were a tad bit dissapointing (actually, ALL of the first one was, well...not very good...) the end to the second one was exactly what I'd hoped would begin the first!!!!!

12.01.2008 06:08 PM

I finished the 1st & 2nd volumes in one sitting. I can't wait for the 3rd!! Does anyone know when it comes out? I heard sometime around Christmas but I don't think I can wait that long!

11.12.2007 06:41 AM

Oh god! I am sooo excited! Now there is going to be 4 volumes and that cliffy at the end of vol. 2 was a killer! I CANNOT WAIT FOR VOLUME 3! So excited! Though I have to admit, I was not so happy with the first volume. There was just something about it that I did not like. But I think they did a lot better with the second one!

10.12.2007 04:08 AM

ok. off topic here. I am not american. How do I change my flag? And the covers for these books are fantastic.

09.12.2007 03:11 AM

Just love that cover!

04.12.2007 04:39 AM

Really cannot wait for volume 3. It's such a brilliant adaptation to a great film. jareth is the coolest.

02.12.2007 04:35 PM

Volume two just came out and I absolutely cannot wait for volume three. I imagine that it will not be released until 2008, which of course is sad, but I suppose I will manage somehow. The storyline is fascinating and the art is beautiful. I am excited to learn more about Jareth's wager with Mizumi, how Toby's magic will develop, how the prophecy will play out, who Moppet is, and what will come of Jareth's visit to Sarah.

27.11.2007 04:58 PM

It´s sooooooo good! I can´t wait for vol 3! I want Sara and Jareth end together too!

27.11.2007 03:14 PM

Aaah, I love this manga so much. And I still want Sarah and Jareth to end up together. I know I already said that. I just wanted to say it again!!

24.11.2007 02:47 AM

22.11.2007 08:27 PM

I've waited most of my life for this manga. It's a great sequal so far!

22.11.2007 08:26 PM

Is this out I needs it so badly i have the first one (pluse movie and sound track.....yea fan) and where it left off gerrrrr i was seeing red and this one looks awsome! must have!

08.11.2007 04:22 PM

Hmmm.... It was alot better than the first one (meaning Vol. 1, not the awesome movie) I'll give it that. At least in this one the art got better, and Sarah actually saw Jareth. But still, no comparison to the movie.

04.11.2007 03:18 PM

I... I... I... HOW CAN I GET THIS??!!!! I WANT IT!!!!

04.11.2007 01:19 PM

omg I think i got high just thinking about itXD

04.11.2007 01:22 AM

31.10.2007 07:12 PM

O_O LOVE THE COVER STILL! I've decided - I'll get this once the final volume comes out. The thing I dislike the most about american volumes: I have to wait about a year for the next volume to come out. hate that.

31.10.2007 05:23 PM

it is a great sequal ! cant wait till volume 3 , any one know when it is comming out ?

31.10.2007 04:50 PM

For anyone wishing to know, I've come across some info on the Goblin King of myth, and it says that the Goblin King was born of a human king and a faerie queen, and became a goblin changeling. Thus it explains Jareth's hairdo. -thinking of Luna the faerie from Legend- Back on subject, I think my mom's getting me the book today. -dies-

29.10.2007 07:39 PM

HOLY CRAPOLI! I LOVE LABYRINTH. I want to read this SO SO SO BAD!!!!

29.10.2007 02:07 AM

27.10.2007 05:48 PM

24.10.2007 10:38 PM

Next volume will be awesome! I hope to see Jareth and Sarah together!

20.10.2007 05:07 AM

I can't wait until the next volume come out XD... I hope to see Jareth and Sarah hooking up too XD I agree.

18.10.2007 03:48 PM

Jareth and Sarah finally hooking up would be the ideal ending,oh man a a recreation of the dance scene..omg I would so melt.

17.10.2007 12:57 AM

I just really hope that Sarah ends up with Jareth. That would just be the sweetest ending in my opinion.

16.10.2007 03:32 PM

Crap! I didn't know it was out already!!! I so have to buy it now!!!

13.10.2007 05:57 PM

Well J, I'm glad for one that they are going to make 4 volumes of this instead of three. But the story could go on MUCH farther. You know by introducing new characters, making new adventures, etc.. I wouldn't want it to go on forever like most mangas, but it's still a good idea.

10.10.2007 08:15 PM

I won't spoil anything here, I will do that on my blog. I will say anyone annoyed with volume one should give the series a second chance. People complained Vol 1 was a series of character introductions and cameos and no plot. It was setting the stage for what is actually a very intricately woven storyline.

A few inconsistancies but otherwise very compelling... I have just finished reading Return to Labyrinth Volume 2. It has a few inconsistencies but otherwise the story is very compelling. I won't spoil it but the story DOES end on a cliff hanger, the very cliff hanger that some wished was the start of volume 1. Now for the flaws and inconsistencies... The Goblin King cannot leave The Labyrinth unless he is summoned. I'm not sure why but these are the rules. This seems most peculiar to me because it's been confirmed that Jareth, himself, built The Labyrinth. The king can't leave the very Labyrinth he created? And here's something curious. Though there were milk bottles outside the castle in the film, goblins apparently have no idea how to make cheese. It's "human food." You would think goblins would love cheese. Though Jareth has ruled for 1,300 years without aging Mizumi refers to Jareth as a sorcerer. Brian Froud seemed to imply that Jareth is a faery because of the similarities to some of his faerie art and Jareth's powers and appearance so now I'm not sure what he is. Sorcerers usually do... you know... age... And Jareth, thankfully, has not. Other than these few things that caused me to have a few questions I loved the Return to Labyrinth volume 2 manga. I actually kind of preferred volume one but now I'm very eager to find out what happens next. I have been told that the manga is now going to be four parts instead of three. I hope the last two parts come out soon and it doesn't take over a year as what happened with Volume 2. Four years is a long time to stretch out a four part manga set. I would be happier if the next two parts came out monthly or every other month. Ah, well. At least the plot is getting very interesting.

10.10.2007 02:02 AM

i agree ,queen. I've been counting the days continuously, bringing me to the egde of my sanity. They HAVE to make these updates faster....

07.10.2007 09:19 PM

can't wait for this... Though they need to make these faster...

05.10.2007 01:57 AM

Love the story though the art can do with alittle improving

02.10.2007 01:57 AM

Can't wait!!! Met the artist for the Dark Crystal Manga at AWA last weekend! She was awesome! Can't wait for both books!

01.10.2007 07:35 PM

The Labyrinth and Return to the Labyrinth continue to enchant and enthrall, and I wait impatiently for the next installment.

01.10.2007 09:36 AM

More the same DarkD...more the same...

30.09.2007 08:26 AM

cant wait to read it

29.09.2007 09:07 PM

The first manga was great, if you can get past the majority of cheesy art (--the manga drawings of Jareth make me cry, even though I love him on the cover art,) but the storyline is awesome. I've been eagerly awaiting the second one.

29.09.2007 10:11 AM

OMG, PLEASE tell me t
