Pantheon High Volume 2

Get ready, Pantheon High! It's homecoming season, and that means it's time for our Fighting Chimeras to whale on Gilgamesh High. Our demigods from Greek, Norse, gyptian and Japanese mythology are gonna demolish those Mesopotamian, Aztec, Indian, and Pacific pantheon punks. With Yukio's luck on our side and Aziza El Ra cheerleading, we can't lose! Let's win this one for Grace and Griffin, trapped in a journey through the underworld that could mean permanent death. But stay alert--the evil gods have plans for the school, and homecoming is the perfect time for them to strike!

BREAKING NEWS: Hear a podcast interview with creator Paul Benjamin at Fanboy Radio

Let's face it, for many of us, high school is the most intense, gut-wrenching, brutal and humiliating experience we'll ever have in life. (Not for me, mind you. I was never a geek. Unlike all of you. Seriously, anyone who reads manga and checks out TOKYOPOP's website has to be a nerd.)

"If only I were a demigod," you've frequently thought. "Then High School would have been a total breeze." Well, I hate to dash your dweebish musings, but according to the world of Pantheon High, being a teenage demigod is full of its own challenges and hardships. (And by the way, if you're into mythology and manga, you've entered a whole new echelon of geekdom.)

Okay, here's Pantheon High's inspired setup: Demigod teenagers. High School. Los Angeles. That's a winning trifecta, folks. Set in modern-day Los Angeles, several demigod teenagers from Greek, Norse, Japanese and Egyptian pantheons attend an exclusive school in the Hollywood Hills. Just like any school, there are bullies. Only, these bad eggs are the children of evil gods--and they've unleashed a plan to usher in Armageddon. Now four unlikely heroes from different cliques must band together to stop them: Aziza, a hot-headed prima donna; Grace, a sword-wielding bookworm; Griffin, a loner with a death wish; and Yukio, an excellent athlete and student.

It's The Breakfast Club meets Clash of the Titans. How cool is that?

I mean, that's almost as cool as this book's amazing art. Steven and Megumi Cummings have done what no other global manga artists have ever done--they have painstakingly hand-toned every page of this manga! Look, Mom! Just like they do it in Japan!

And I better not forget Paul Benjamin, writer extraordinaire. He's the biggest nerd behind this whole Pantheon High project. Check this out. This is how he came up with the idea for the book: “A few years ago, I was talking with a fellow geek about how D&D cleric characters have a direct connection to their deities. Pray to Thor for a bolt of lightning to smite your enemy and it actually happens. Imagine having a direct line to your god! I began playing with ideas for incorporating the ancient gods into our modern day world.”

Dungeons and Dragons and mythology and manga? Now that's entering the realm of the uber dorks! Man, I can't even begin to imagine what torture Paul Benjamin went through in high school. Even if he was a demigod, he would have been teased mercilessly!

Well, you know what I always say: Making manga is the best revenge!

Nice, readable story with wonderful art work. Fans of mythology in general should enjoy the series. What is perhaps the best thing about this series are the minute details embedded into each panel. The artists are top notch. They make sure to provide small, yet carefully detailed hints at various mythologies. Readers should take note to pause away from the engaging story and pan the beautiful artwork. Certain panels exquisitely showcase the ranging influence mythology has on the series. From small paintings to vast, panning landscapes, the artwork truly captures the "feel" of the manga. Benjamin's story is well-written and filled with many throwaways to classic myths. The only criticism would be that Benjamin's insistence on mixing contemporary culture with mythology sometimes feel tiresome and unnecessary. Yes, we are to understand that the plot revolves around the contemporary off springs of ancient myths, but this often becomes too much. Less intermingling of contemporary popular culture with the story would have been appreciated. C'mon, I think we've all heard enough of Britney Spears; last thing we need is commentary about Britney from Demi-Gods!

Went to A-Kon 19 here in Dallas today, got to meet the writer Paul Benjamin. Bought both volume 1 and 2 of the books. After seeing him in the "Mythology in Manga" panel today, and then meeting him, then reading his books, I can only say this.... I now understand how he is trying to reach out to people to teach them many different mythologies, and, my self, having been brought up on pretty much a strict greek mythology, can only applaud and support his efforts. Learning from our past is the best way to be prepared for our futures. He's doing a great job and I can only hope that TOKYOPOP will continue to publish his great works. Thank you Paul!

I have always loved Greek mythology, and the fact that the main characters are in high school (something I can related to) just makes this story even better. I highly recommend this manga for everyone.
