Vampire Doll: Guilt-na-Zan

Review of "Vampire Doll: Guilt-na-Zan"

Shizuru's Rating: 5 of 5

I came across this manga at my wonderful local library and figured that since I have read every other manga there, why not this one? The back cover talks about gender-bending vampires dressed as maids, so I became a little disillusioned... my stupid self never bothered to see that it was rated as a comedy, so I was pleasantly suprised when I read it.

Guilt-na-Zan was the Lord of the Vampires a good century ago, until an exorcist trapped him in a cross. After being stuck in this purgatory-like state, he wakes up as a beautiful girl, more specifically, as the maid for his exorcist's descendant, Kyoji. The look on his face when he discovers this (and his "new powers", replacing his evil ones) is totally priceless.

The characters are all distinct and funny in their own way; Tonae is the sweet innocent girl with amazing power (and the ability to turn Guilt-na-Zan back into his original form), Vincent is the kind, but stupid servant, Kyoji is the demented exorcist with a Lolita fetish, and his brother Kyoichi is the pathetic, sweet and also crazy would-be villain. Guilt-na-zan (or Guilt-na in his female form) is a strong character who tries to make the best of his situation.

This book is hilarious, like Trinity Blood meets Ramna 1/2. Even the character descriptions are funny. The art is beautiful, with the vampires and demons looking as breathtaking as they do in all those vampire shojo dramas. I find the whole gender-bending thing pretty cool, at least in this series. I guess in that aspect, Guilt-na-Zan is more like Ramna than Abel, but that works out quite well. Some of the volume takes a break from the comedy, and is more sweet, particularly towards the end of the volume.

The only thing I don't get is why its also rated as a part of the horror genre. It wasn't scary at all, though there are some action sequences.

Overall, I was so pleased with it that I'm going to buy volume two this weekend (the library doesn't have it in, but oh well. It's worth it!)

When I first read the summary on the back of the book I was like, "okay..." but as soon as I read it I knew that I shouldn't have judged the book by its cover...that was a bad pun...
