The Undying Edge - Reviews to sharpen your...

Finally after a nice long wait (for me at least) the final volume of Broken Angels has been released. I've said before that this series has become one of my favorite series of all time and all I can say is that the last volume was not a disappointment.

Broken Angels: There are 5 volumes in this series. This series is a little hard to place; I guess I could describe it as a drama and action manga. The first volume is much more light-hearted than the rest of the series and the story gets more intense as it progresses. The story follows a girl named Sunao Fujiwara who is the oddball at her school where she insists on wearing boys cloths and generally not paying attention to the teachers (or anyone else for that matter). But the strangest thing about her is the fact that she can control water to do literally what she wants and sometimes without thinking. Her power comes to her more out of instinct than actually controlling it, which could actually put those around her in trouble sometimes. Sunao seems very cold but has a soft spot for those in need. The first person she helps is the student president Kureha Ikushima who tried to burn down the school but Sunao helps her deal with her feelings and taught her to be herself; though now she deals with her feelings and desires in a more affectionate and perverted manner. After that Kureha was determined to attach herself to Sunao and be with her as much as possible. One of the strangest characters in the beginning is the school nurse Kaguya Shizuki, whom seems to dress in a feminine fashion and has a peculiar behavior since most of the time he seems very laid back but knows more than he lets on. The most mysterious character is Sunao's guardian Hokage Minai who doesn't get involved much until the end. For the first three volumes the main focus was on the people Sunao met and helped while only hinting at the main story of who Sunao is and where she came from. The last two volumes switch the focus to Sunao's past, who her family really is and where she gained her powers. Her past has deep ties with Kaguya's family of which he cut off all ties with and wants to avoid at all costs. It seems that his family's darkest secret involved Sunao's mother in the worst way and now it is expected that Sunao should follow in her footsteps, which her mother tried to prevent with all her power. The stories through the series get more intense with each volume and even more twisted. With the last volume it turns most of what you know around and keeps you guessing of what the outcome will be till the last page.

My Opinion: Ever really liked something but could never really express why exactly why you liked it? Well, it's kinda the same with this series, but non-the-less it just hits a cord that makes me like it a lot. The first volume drew me in and I immediately knew that I would have to get the rest when they came out. The first turned out to be just a taste of what the rest of the series was capable of. The stories got more intense and more involved. For many the stories might not make much sense and be very confusing (my brother couldn't understand it). I guess one of the things I really like about this series is the fact that you have to really look into the stories to find the meanings behind them, basically it makes you think. One of the other things that is interesting is the characters and their development within the series. It seems that a few characters grow for the better while others fester within. The character's true nature and how they have changed is only shown in the end, which can be very different than what you would have first thought. This series was very short but it doesn't lack anything. The art style is also a nice point and it compliments the storyline well. I was fully satisfied by the ending and the series overall. I would suggest this series to any true manga lover. It's almost sad to say goodbye to my favorite series, hopefully Setsuri Tsuzuki will come out with another series.

Hope you enjoy as much as I have!
