Review of "Steady Beat"

Steady Beat:
There are two volumes released with one more to come. This manga is mainly drama filled slice-of-life. The story deals with Leah Winters and her finding and dealing with the question of weather or not her sister Sarai is gay. Basically hitting on one of the major issues that today's society seems to be obsessed about. The first volume is where Leah discovers a love letter that fell out of her sister's bag that is signed "Love Jessica", a name that is not exactly a very masculine. After Leah now tries to deal with the question of her sister being gay and how she decides to deal with it. Her main worry then becomes of how their mother will deal with this piece of information, being a republican senator in the good old state of Texas. If that wasn't enough she also worries over what will happen if the word spread about her sister to the rest of the town. She even gets a mysterious phone call concerning the letter she found and set up a meeting, which she missed due to falling on the road and knocking herself out. When she wakes up she has a surprise meeting with Elijah and after becomes friends with him. The second volume goes only a little more detail than the first but not too much more. In the second we learn a little more of Leah's mother and of her personality, and of how much of a politician she is (its not to much but it shows how far she would go to keep on important people's good side). The biggest jump in volume two was when Leah had to actually face what is was to be gay.

My opinion:
The series is a nice real series, dealing with real life issues. It depicts what can actually happen in real life, hence slice-of-life. The second volume did not become as much involved as I had hoped and didn't really fulfill what the description said on the back. I like what the story line is centered on and how the main character is learning and dealing with what she is learning about. In the second volume it shows just what it is to only know that homosexuality exists and accepting it than having it right in front of you and dealing with it, (this I know from personal experience). This series isn't just hard hitting but it still has a nice amount of comedy in it but not too much (like so many series I read). Overall this has so far been a enjoyable series to read and I look forward to the next volume.
